Salem Dominates Lane Twice

NUTTER FORT, W.Va. –The Salem University baseball team dominated Lane twice Saturday afternoon, as it won the first game 14-1 and the second game 7-2 at Frank Loria Memorial Field. 
 
With the two wins, Salem jumps to over .500 with a 9-8 record. 
 
In the first game, junior Sam Chapman earned his fourth win (4-0) on the hill as he tallied seven strikeouts allowing one run on five hits.  
 
Sophomore Austin Whetzel led the way offensively for the Tigers as he was 3-for-3 at the plate with five RBI and a grand slam, while junior Tyler Ault was 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and one RBI.
 
Lane held the early advantage on the Tigers as they scored in the top of the first inning off an error. 
 
Salem gained the lead in the top of the third as Ault and senior Harrison Hollis scored off on an error by Lane for a 2-1 lead. In the next at-bat, senior Jimmy Cramer notched his first home run of the season as he homered to left field for a 3-1 lead. 
 
In the bottom of the fourth, junior Dalton Robison homered to left center and scored Whetzel as Salem held a 9-1 lead. 
 
As the bases were loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning, Whetzel blasted a homer over the fence for a grand slam and a 13-1 lead. In the next at-bat, senior Thirus Jones connected for the Tigers' fourth home run of the game as they led 14-1. 
 
In game two, junior James Wiseman notched the win on the mound as he allowed five hits and zero earned runs with five strikeouts. 
 
Ault and Robison each were 2-for-3 from the plate as Ault tallied two RBI and Robison notched one. 
 
No runs were scored until the fourth inning as Lane got on the board first from an overthrow with a 1-0 lead. 
 
The Tiger answered big in the bottom of the fourth as they tallied six runs in the inning for a 6-1 lead. The bases were loaded, and Hollis was walked to score Robison to tie the game 1-1. In the next at-bat, Ault singled and drove in two runs.
 
The Tigers added their last run in the bottom of the sixth as Robison doubled to left center and scored sophomore Remmington Boyce
 
The Tigers are back in action tomorrow morning as they face Lane for a nine-inning game at 11:00 a.m. at Frank Loria Memorial Field.
