NUTTER FORT, W.Va. –The Salem University baseball team dropped a matchup with Grove City 13-5, Friday night.
With the loss, the Tigers fall to 15-12, while Grove City jumps to 10-6.
Sophomore
Carlos Pena came in to pitch in the fourth inning as he tossed a career-high 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits and one earned run in five innings.
Junior
Walker Dodero was 2-for-4 with a home run, a hit and two RBI, while classmate
Tyler Ault generated a home run and one walk.
The Tigers tallied the first run of the evening as senior
Jimmy Cramer grounded out but notched an RBI as senior
Harrison Hollis crossed home plate for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
In the top of the second, Grove City tied the game 1-1 after an RBI double to right center. In the top of the third, Grove City took the lead 2-1 after an RBI ground out to score the runner on third base.
Grove City opened its lead in the top of the fourth, as it added six runs off six hits and an error on the Tigers.
In the bottom of the seventh, Dodero scored off a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Remmington Boyce to cut the lead to 8-2.
Ault hit his team-leading ninth home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring Grove City's lead to 8-3. Three batters later, Dodero blasted a two-run shot to right field to bring the game to three runs as the Tigers trailed 8-5.
Grove City added five runs in the ninth inning to expand its lead to 13-5.
The Tigers are back in action tomorrow as they will host Grove City for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
