SALEM, W.Va. - The Salem University softball team split their home opener with Carlow as they won game one 9-2 and fell in game two 6-3, Sunday afternoon.
The split brings the Tigers to 5-13 on the season.
In game one, the Salem out hit the Celtics 11-7, scoring first in the second inning.
A lead-off double from junior
Christine Bombardiere got things going for the Tigers in the bottom of the second inning.
An error allowed junior
Morgan Atkinson to reach second base, advancing Bombardiere to third.
A sacrifice grounder by freshman
Paige Winans scored Bombardiere for a 1-0 lead, and advanced Atkinson to third.
Senior
Kaleigh Decker hit an RBI single to center field to bring Atkinson home for a 2-0 advantage, while an RBI triple to right field from
Kimberly Reckling and an RBI single from sophomore
Casey Moritz gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead after the second inning.
The Celtics put their only two runs on the board in the third inning cutting the lead 4-2.
The Tigers answered back in the bottom of the third inning with another double from Bombardiere, while Atkinson hit an RBI triple to right field, bringing the score to 5-2. Atkinson scored on an RBI single from
Sydney McPherson as the Tigers led 6-2.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Salem scored on a fielder's choice bring the lead 7-2. With bases loaded, Reckling singled through the left side bringing another run across the plate for an 8-2 advantage.
Junior
Rosey Romick tripled to left center in the bottom of the sixth inning, as an error from the third baseman allowed Romick to score and give Salem a comfortable 9-2 lead.
In game two, the Tigers started the game scoring on a pass ball for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
The Celtics scored four runs in the top of the second inning off of four hits and an error as they led Salem 4-1.
The next run of the game didn't come until the bottom of the fifth from the Tigers after a pair of singles from junior
Breanna Jimenez and Romick. A sacrifice grounder from Bombardiere allowed Jimenez to score, narrowing the lead 4--2.
Carlow added another two runs in the top of the seventh after a pair of singles and a two-run double, bringing the score to 6-2.
The Tigers went on to score one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning with a double from Romick and an RBI single from Atkinson, as the Tigers fell just short 6-3.
The Tigers host Concord on Tuesday for a double header at 3:00 p.m.
