PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Salem University softball team split against Alderson Broaddus, dropping the first game 9-7 and winning the second game 6-4, Wednesday evening.
With the split, the Tigers move to 6-16 on the season.
In game one, the first four innings were scoreless despite the eight hits allowed. The first run didn't cross the plate until the top of the fifth inning from the Tigers.
Freshman
Kimberly Reckling led off the inning with a single through the right side. Reckling scored off of a double to left center from sophomore
Casey Moritz to take the lead 1-0.
A sacrifice grounder allowed Moritz to advance to third base. Moritz scored on a throwing error by the Battlers to increase the lead 2-0.
The Battlers answered back scoring a run in the bottom of the fifth to narrow the lead 2-1.
In the top of the sixth with runners on first and second, junior
Chyann Hooker doubled down the left field line bringing in one run with runners on second and third. A defensive error allowed another run to cross the plate giving the Tigers a 4-1 lead.
Two sacrifice grounders scored two more runs for the Tigers, stretching the lead to 6-1.
Alderson Broaddus went on to score five runs in the bottom of the sixth tying the game 6-6, to take the game into extra innings.
With the game in an international tie-breaker, a sacrifice bunt moved the Tiger runner over to third base. Freshman
Paige Winans hit an RBI single to right field to allow Salem to regain the lead 7-6.
A walk off three-run home run gave the Battlers the win after eight innings.
Hooker went 2-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
In game two, the Tigers came out hot scoring two runs in the first inning. A pair of singles from Moritz and junior
Breanna Jimenez put runners on first and second, advancing to second and third shortly after on a wild pitch.
A fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly allowed two runs to score, putting the Tigers on the board 2-0 in the first inning.
In the third inning, the Tigers scored two more after a double from junior
Rosey Romick and a two-run blast over the left field fence from junior
Christine Bombardiere to take a 4-0 advantage going into the bottom of the third.
Alderson Broaddus got on the board in the bottom of the third inning narrowing the lead 4-1.
The Battlers went on to score three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game 4-4.
Sophomore
Sydney McPherson singled through the right side and advanced to second on an error by the Battlers in the sixth inning. Another Battler error allowed McPherson to score on sacrifice by sophomore
Olivia Davoli taking the lead 5-4.
Hooker singled to right field to put runners on first and third. A sacrifice fly to left field by Winans scored Davoli, expanding the lead 6-4.
The Tigers held the Battlers off defensively to get the win 6-4 to avoid the sweep.
Bombardiere led the Tigers in the second game going 2-4 at the plate with a home run and three RBI.
The Tigers are back in action tomorrow as they host Glenville at Hope field at 2:00 p.m.
