SALEM, W.Va. – The Salem University softball team dropped two games to Glenville 5-4 and 7-3, on a windy Thursday afternoon.
The losses take the Tigers to 6-18 on the season.
In game one, the Pioneers out hit the Tigers 12-9 with the first run scored in the third inning by Glenville to take the lead 1-0.
Freshman
Paige Winans led off the bottom of the third inning with a single through the left side. Another single from sophomore
Casey Moritz and an error by Glenville advanced the runners an extra base.
A single to left field from junior
Rosey Romick drove Winans in to tie the game 1-1. A walk forced bases loaded for Salem as junior
Sydney McPherson singled through the right side to score Moritz and Romick to take the lead 3-1 after the third inning.
The Pioneers scored again in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Glenville scored two more in the sixth inning to regain the lead 4-3.
In the seventh inning, Glenville stretched the lead 5-3 after scoring another run.
The last chance for the Tigers to score started with a triple to right field from junior
Breanna Jimenez. An error from Glenville allowed Jimenez to score, but Salem's offense couldn't capitalize on a bases loaded opportunity to give the Pioneers the win 5-4.
McPherson led the first game going 3-4 at the plate with two runs-batted-in.
The Tigers came in game two scoring first in the first inning. Moritz led off the Tigers with a walk and shortly advancing to third on two sacrifice hits. An RBI single from junior
Christine Bombardiere gave the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.
The next run of the game came in the third inning from Salem as Bombardiere hit a blast over the left field fence to take the 2-0 advantage.
The Pioneers' bats started going in the top of the fifth inning as they scored three runs off of a single, a wild-pitch and a sacrifice fly to take a 3-2 lead.
The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning 3-3 after Moritz singled to center field, stole second base and hustled home on a grounder to the third baseman.
Glenville's fire was still going in the top of the sixth as they score three more runs on a solo and two-run home run to take control 6-3.
The Pioneers went on to score another run in the top of the seventh to secure the win 7-3.
Junior
Morgan Atkinson went 2-3 at the plate with a double, while Bombardiere also went 2-3 with a home run and two RBI. Moritz scored two of Salem's three runs.
The Tigers travel to Frostburg State Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
