FROSTBURG, Md. – The Salem University softball team earned a 9-6 win in the split against Frostburg with a 10-9 loss, Monday afternoon.
With the split, the Tigers move to 7-19 on the season.
In game one, the Bobcats got on the board in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.
A pair of singles from junior
Christine Bombardiere and junior
Sydney McPherson put runners on first and second in the top of the second inning for the Tigers. Senior
Kaleigh Decker hit a two-run double to right field to score take the lead 2-1.
A pair of walks, a single and a triple allowed Frostburg to regain the lead 4-2 in the bottom of the second.
Sophomore
Casey Moritz reached first base on a Bobcat error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Junior
Rosey Romick singled to center field to drive in Moritz, cutting the lead 4-3 in the third inning.
The next run of the game came in the top of the fifth from the Tigers. Moritz singled to the short stop and advanced all the way to third base on two sacrifice bunts. With Moritz on third, Bombardiere sent the ball over the right center fence to take the lead 5-4.
A pair of singles and a fielding errors allowed the Bobcats to score another two runs in the bottom of the fifth for a one-run lead, 6-5.
A solo home run from sophomore
Olivia Davoli tied the game for the Tigers 6-6 in the sixth inning.
With the score tied in the top of the seventh inning, the Tigers fought hard to score some more runs.
Romick led off the inning with a single to right field. Catcher's interference put runners on first and second for Salem. McPherson singled to right field scoring Romick to control the game 7-6.
A wild pitch advanced the Tiger runners to second and third, allowing a ground ball and a Frostburg error to score two more runs to give Salem the 9-6 win.
Game two started with the Tigers scoring two runs in the top of the first. Moritz led off with a walk and a pair of singles from junior
Breanna Jimenez and Romick drove Moritz in for a 1-0 lead.
A fielder's choice loaded the bases for Salem. Another fielder's choice allowed Jimenez to score, increasing the Tigers' lead 2-0.
A pair of singles and a double from Frostburg tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the first.
The next run of the game didn't come until the top of the fourth inning, as the Tigers tackled on five runs.
Senior
Veneise Mendez hit a single through the left side to put runners on first and third. Mendez stole second as Decker scored on an error to take the lead 3-2.
Moritz hit an infield single and stole second putting the Tigers on second and third. An error from the Bobcats allowed two more runs to score increasing the lead 5-2.
Two doubles to center field from Romick and Bombardiere gave the Tigers a five run lead, 7-2 going into the bottom of the fourth.
Frostburg went on to score one run in the bottom of the fifth cutting the lead 7-3.
With bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning, a wild pitch advanced the runners one base scoring a run. A sacrifice grounder scored another run for the Tigers stretching the lead 9-3.
The Bobcats put the pressure on by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 9-6 game.
The Tigers went into the bottom of the seventh inning with the lead, but Frostburg's bats came alive to score four more runs to take a 10-9 win over the Tigers.
Romick went 5-3 at the plate with a double, producing three RBI and scoring three runs, while Bombardiere went 4-8 with a double, a home run and three runs-batted-in.
Salem is back in action tomorrow as they travel to Ohio to take on Malone for a 3:00 p.m. start.
