NUTTER FORT, W.Va. -The Salem University baseball team picked up the 3-0 series sweep over Central Penn as it collected a 22-9 win, on a very cold Sunday afternoon.
Salem improves to 21-14, which is the most wins since 2004-05 as they won 23 that season under Rich Leitch.
Freshman
Devin Fish earned his first collegiate victory (1-0) as he tossed six strikeouts and allowed six hits with three earned runs in five innings.
Senior
Isaiah Arroyo and junior
Noah Suarez each were 3-for-4 from the plate, while Arroyo notched three RBI and Suarez recorded four.
The Tigers tallied the first runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning as junior
Dalton Robison doubled to left center to score senior
Harrison Hollis and senior
Jimmy Cramer for a 2-0 lead.
Central Penn tied the game 2-2 after a solo HR and a passed ball.
In the bottom of the second, Suarez singled up the middle to score Arroyo for a 3-2 lead over Central Penn.
Sophomore
Austin Whetzel singled through the left side in the bottom of the third inning to score sophomore
Tyler D'Alessandro for a 4-2 advantage.
Two batters later, freshman
Michael Rosario hit a sacrifice fly to left field as Robison crossed home to extend the lead to 5-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers added three runs as they led 8-3.
Cramer hit a ball to left center for a stand-up RBI triple as D'Alessandro scored to bump the lead to 9-4 in the bottom of the fifth.
Arroyo hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to 11-4. Two batters later Suarez singled through the left side to bring home sophomore
Remmington Boyce for a 12-4 lead. In the next at-bat, Hollis doubled to left field as Rosario crossed home to push the lead to 13-4.
Suarez scored on a passed ball for a ten-run lead, 14-4, while Robison hit a sacrifice fly to deep left field to score Hollis for a 15-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, Suarez went yard to left field for a two-run homer and a 17-7 Tiger lead. The Tigers added two more runs, then sophomore
Andrew Friend singled to right field for his first collegiate RBI as senior
Parker Lenivy scored for a 20-7 lead. Salem added two more runs in the inning to take a commanding 22-7 lead.
The Tigers are back in action Tuesday as they travel to Concord for one nine-inning game slated for 3:00 p.m.
