SALEM, W.Va. – The Salem University softball team dropped to Alderson Broaddus (AB) twice, 3-2 in game one and 11-1 in the second game, Wednesday afternoon.
With the losses, the Tigers move to 8-26 on the season, as the Battlers increase to 9-26.
In game one, Salem outhit AB 10-5, but did not capitalize with runners on base.
Sophomore
Casey Moritz started the Tiger's offense off with a shot to right center recording a triple. Moritz was gunned down at home as she was going for the inside the park home run.
With a close-knit game, the first run did not come until the top of the fourth inning from the Battlers after a couple of Tiger errors to take a 1-0 lead.
AB went on to score two more runs in the top of the fifth off of a single and a pair of doubles stretching the lead 3-0.
The Tigers' bats got hot in the bottom of the sixth as junior
Morgan Atkinson led off the inning with a single to center field. Another single to center field from junior
Rosey Romick put runners on first and second.
Pinch hitter junior
Chyann Hooker doubled to right field to drive Atkinson across the plate as Romick advanced to third to cut the lead 3-1.
With runners on second and third sophomore
Brianna Bennett hit a sacrifice fly to left field to advance the runners, scoring Romick to give the Battlers the 3-2 win.
Moritz, Atkinson and senior
Kaleigh Decker led the Tigers with two hits apiece, while Hooker went 1-1 with a double and an RBI.
Junior pitcher
Christine Bombardiere recorded seven strikeouts and only one walk.
In game two, the Battlers outhit the Tigers 9-6.
AB scored a run in the first inning to take a quick 1-0 lead. The Battlers shortly added another in the top of the third to expand the lead 2-0.
The lead increased in the top of the fifth inning after Alderson Broaddus scored five more runs for a 7-0 advantage.
The Battlers tacked on four more in the top of the sixth for an 11 run lead.
The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as junior
Breanna Jimenez legged out a grounder to second base followed by a double from Decker to send Jimenez around the bases.
The Tigers could not rally and took the loss 11-1.
Atkinson led the Tigers in game two going 2-3 at the plate.
The Tigers travel to Charleston for a doubleheader against the Golden Eagles tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
