Salem Over Powered by Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Salem University softball team fell twice to Charleston 9-5 and 8-0, Thursday afternoon.
 
The Tigers drop to 8-28 on the season.
 
Charleston outhit the Tigers 9-7. Salem got on the board first in the top of the first inning scoring two runs. With runners on first and third, an infield error allowed both runs to cross the plate for a quick 2-0 Tiger lead.
 
The Golden Eagles shortened the lead in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 game.
 
Charleston tacked on another run in the bottom of the second and again in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead over the Tigers.
 
The Golden Eagles stretched their lead after scoring six more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 9-2 advantage.
 
In the top of the seventh, the Tigers' offense came to life with junior Rosey Romick leading off the inning with a single to left field. Sophomore Casey Moritz followed with another single to left field to put runners on first and second.
 
A wild pitch advanced the base runners and an infield grounder allowed Romick to cross the plate and Moritz to reach third cutting the lead 9-3.
 
Senior Kaleigh Decker hit a double to center field to bring Moritz in, 9-4. Sophomore Destinee Baldwin took a pitch to center field for an RBI single, driving Decker home to shorten the score 9-5.
 
The Tigers couldn't keep the rally going as they lost 9-5.
 
Moritz and Decker each went 1-3 at the plate with two runs apiece, while Decker added an RBI with a double to her book.
 
Charleston tallied 14 hits, while the Tigers had trouble rallying with their seven hits to score a run in game two.
 
The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning off of a pair of singles and a double to take a 2-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the third inning, Charleston stacked three more runs to expand the lead 5-0.
 
Two more runs were marked in the book in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Golden Eagles off of three hits taking the 7-0 advantage.
 
The Golden Eagles score another run in the bottom of the sixth, putting the run-rule into effect to take the win 8-0.
 
Junior Breanna Jimenez led the Tigers at the plate in the second game going 3-3.
 
The Tigers are set to host Bluefield State Saturday for a double header beginning at 2:00 p.m.
