SALEM, W.Va. - The Salem University softball team earned two wins against Bluefield State 8-0 and 13-0, Saturday afternoon as they honored its 2019 seniors on Senior Day.
The sweep improves the Tigers to 10-28 on the season.
The Tigers outhit the Big Blues 8-3 in game one.
The first run of the game didn't come until the bottom of the third as junior
Rosey Romick hit an RBI single up the middle for a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers' bats came to life in the bottom of the fifth inning as they recorded five of their eight hits, including a lead-off single through the left side from junior
Sydney McPherson. Another single from junior
Chyann Hooker and a wild pitch put runners on second and third for the Tigers.
Romick singled to center field to bring another two runs in, increasing the lead 3-0.
With runners on first and second, senior
Kaleigh Decker hit a single to right field forcing a Big Blue error and another run to score for Salem to take a 4-0 advantage.
Junior
Christine Bombardiere doubled to right center driving in two more runs, stretching the lead 6-0 going into the sixth inning.
McPherson lead-off the sixth inning with another single and a stolen base to put her in scoring position. Hooker hit an RBI double to center field to bring McPherson across the plate for a 7-0 lead.
Romick reached on an Big Blue error which gave Hooker the chance to cross the plate, ending the game in six innings for a 8-0 Tiger win.
Bombardiere earned the win recording eight strikeouts, while she was 1-3 at the plate with a double and two runs-batted-in.
McPherson went 2-3 at the plate scoring three runs, while Hooker was 2-2 with a double and a run-batted-in. Romick helped lead the Tigers in victory with two hits, a run, and four RBI.
In game two, the Tigers outhit Bluefield 13-2.
Salem earned three runs in the bottom of the second inning, as Bombardiere led-off with a double to center field. A walk and a bunt juiced the bases for the Tigers.
Junior
Morgan Atkinson hit an RBI single to center field for a 1-0 lead.
A sacrifice groundball to the pitcher allowed another run to score giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Romick singled to right center to score Atkinson, stretching the lead 3-0.
With runners on first and third in the bottom of the third inning, sophomore
Olivia Davoli hit an infield single to score Bombardiere, 4-0, placing runners on first and third.
A few batters later, Atkinson hit an RBI single through the right side to take a 5-0 advantage. With runners on first and third, Atkinson stole second allowing Davoli to take home on the throw for a 6-0 lead. Another RBI single from Romick drove Atkinson in for a four run inning and a 7-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tigers scored another six runs to cut the game short in five innings for a 13-0 win.
Romick earned the win as she struck out three girls, while going 2-2 at the plate with two runs-batted-in.
The Tigers travel to Davis & Elkins on Wednesday for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
