ELKINS, W.Va. – The Salem University softball team fell to Davis & Elkins 6-1 and 5-3, Wednesday night.
With the losses, the Tigers fall to 10-30 on the season.
In the first game, D&E outhit the Tigers 8-6.
The Tigers got on the board first in the top of the third inning. Senior
Kaleigh Decker tripled down the right field line to put a runner in scoring position for the Tigers. Junior
Sydney McPherson hit a single to center field to drive in Decker for a 1-0 lead.
The Senators didn't respond until the bottom of the fourth inning by scoring one run to tie the game at 1-1.
D&E went on to score five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the win over the Tigers 6-1.
Decker led the Tigers going 2-3 at the plate with a triple and the Tigers only run of the game, while junior
Morgan Atkinson went 2-2 with a walk.
Both the Tigers and the Senators produced five hits in game two.
Atkinson led off the second inning with a single to left field shortly advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. An infield error allowed Atkinson to score giving the Tigers the 1-0 advantage.
With runners on second and third in the top of the third, Atkinson hit a sacrifice fly to right field to put another run on the board for a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning, junior
Breanna Jimenez hit a double to left field. Atkinson singled to score Jimenez, stretching the lead to 3-0.
Davis & Elkins went on to score five runs off of three hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-3 win over the Tigers.
Jimenez led the Tigers at the plate going 2-3 with two runs scored, a double and a walk, while Atkinson produced two hits in four at-bats with two runs-batted-in and a run scored.
The game scheduled for Saturday at Bluefield State has been cancelled.
The Tigers travel to Kentucky State on Tuesday for a doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
