NUTTER FORT, W.Va. –The Salem University baseball team split with Virginia State as it fell in game one 11-2 and downed the Trojans in game two 13-4, Sunday.
With the split, Salem sits at 24-23, while VSU is 17-18.
In game one, junior
Walker Dodero was 1-for-3 with one RBI, while junior
Dalton Robison was also 1-for-3 with one run scored.
Virginia State notched the first runs of the game as it scored two runs in each of the first two innings for a 4-0 lead.
Salem answered in the bottom of the third as Robison crossed home off a passed ball to cut the lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, with the bases loaded Dodero was nailed by a pitch to bring senior
Harrison Hollis home as the score stood at 4-2 in favor of the Trojans.
Virginia State added seven runs in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 11-2.
In the nightcap, freshman
Mauricio Hernandez earned the win (2-0) allowing just four hits and two runs with two strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Dodero continued his tear, as he was 3-for-4 with five RBI and two home runs, while junior
Parker Lenivy was 2-for-4 with four RBI and one home run.
In the bottom of the first inning, Dodero went yard for the fourth time in two days as he smacked a two-run shot to right field for a 2-0 Tiger lead.
Lenivy doubled in the bottom of the second as sophomore
Tyler D'Alessandro and junior
Tyler Ault scored for a 4-0 lead. In the next at-bat sophomore,
Remmington Boyce scored on a passed ball. Later, Robison hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Lenivy for a 6-0 lead.
In the next at-bat, Dodero doubled down the right field line to score Hollis, while Dodero scored on a throwing error for an 8-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the third, Lenivy hit his second home run in two days as he sent a two-run shot to right field for a 10-0 lead.
Later in the inning, Dodero hit his second home run of the game and fifth in two days off a two-run bomb to right field for a 12-0 advantage.
Virginia State added a run in the top of the fourth off a solo home run as the Tigers led 12-1.
VSU notched another solo homer in the top of the sixth to cut the Tiger lead to 12-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ault doubled to left center as senior
Isaiah Arroyo scored for a 13-2 advantage.
The Tigers are back in action Tuesday as they travel to Alderson Broaddus for a game at 4:00 p.m.
