SALEM, W.Va. – An RBI walk-off single from junior
Sydney McPherson in the seventh inning gave the Tigers a 7-6 win to split the series with Kentucky State after a 8-1 loss in game one.
With the split, the Tigers move to 8-22 on the season.
In game one, the Thorobreds scored first in the top of the second inning with a pair of doubles and an error for a 1-0 lead.
Kentucky State went on to score two more runs in the top of the third, increasing the lead 3-0.
Four more runs were added on in the top of the fifth to stretch the Thorobreds' lead 7-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, junior
Rosey Romick singled to the pitcher and advanced to second on a throwing error. With two outs and Romick on second, junior
Christine Bombardiere singled down the left field line to send the runner across home plate cutting the score 7-1.
Kentucky State score one more run in the top of the seventh to take the 8-1 win.
In game two, the Thorobreds scored two runs in the top of the second and two more in the top of the third to take a quick 4-0 lead over the Tigers.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Salem got on the board scoring one run. Junior
Breanna Jimenez led of reaching first and advancing to second on a throwing error from Kentucky State.
Junior
Morgan Atkinson hit a sacrifice fly to right field moving Jimenez to third. Another sacrifice fly ball from Bombardiere allowed Jimenez to put a run on the board for the Tigers to narrow the lead 4-1.
In the top of the fifth, the Thorobreds cushioned their lead by scoring two more runs on three singles and a fielding error for a 6-1 lead.
The Tigers went on a two-out-rally scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Atkinson reached first on a fielding error. Bombardiere singled up the middle and Romick earned a walk to load the bases for the Tigers.
McPherson doubled to the left field fence clearing the bases to cut the lead 6-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers had one last try to score some runs. With one out and a runner on first base, Jimenez doubled to left field to put runners on second and third.
A sacrifice grounder advanced the runners to add another run to the board for a 6-5 game.
Bombardiere singled to right field to score Jimenez tying the game 6-6.
Romick reached first on a walk to put the Tigers on first and second.
McPherson hit a walk-off single up the middle to score pinch runner junior Kiera Johnson to steal the win 7-6 over the Thorobreds.
The Tigers travel to Pittsburgh-Johnstown on Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
