Salem, WV – An explosive third quarter from Salem University women's basketball secured the 106-91 win over King University on Wednesday.
Nerea Arambarri Fernandez led the Tigers with a double-double on the night with 24 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Aleena Mongerie added 20 points followed by Kendra Stanford with 17 and Kalyne Daniels with 13. The Tigers shot 65 percent from the line and 47 percent from the field.
A three from Mongerie put the Tigers ahead by one a minute into play. The Tornados built up a lead of six before the Tigers answered with eight consecutive points to go ahead by two. King struck back to tie the game and go into the second with the 22-21 advantage.
The Tornados built up a nine-point lead with six minutes left in the second. The Tigers went on multiple runs, outscoring the Tornados 24-15. Teyarra Johnson hit a buzzer three to go into the half 48-48.
The Tigers came out of the half on a 7-2 run to go ahead by five. With four minutes left in the third, the Tigers scored seven in a row off a layup from Daniels and Jamya Miller and a three by Vantanae Garrett to extend the lead 66-58. The Tigers closed out the quarter with the final four points to go into the fourth with the 81-64 lead.
The Tigers had their largest lead of the night of 20 after Allysa McRae opened the fourth with a three. King cut the lead to 11 twice in the final minute but could not overcome to deficit.
