BECKLEY, West Virginia - In the second leg of the Salem doubleheader in Beckley, the Salem women's soccer team found themselves in a defensive struggle with the Shaw Bears. Scoring chances were few and far between, and the match resulted in a 0-0 draw.Â
In the first half, Salem had to contend with two major factors. First, there was the Shaw defense that held steadfast all day. Second, there was the rain which drenched the contests from whistle to whistle. Neither team found much of a groove in the first half, and the 0-0 deadlock held into the break.Â
After the break, the pressure was on as both teams were desperate to take the lead in the contest. Vlora Dibrani, Oceane Deslauriers, and Ana Caroline Lopes controlled the offensive attack for the Tigers, and the Salem backline had a heroic effort as they held off the Bears attack all evening. In goal, Alexandra Issard tallied an impressive 11 saves in her whistle to whistle performance. Unfortunately, Salem's strong second half play was still not quite enough to take the advantage, and the game ended in a hard fought 0-0 draw after 90 minutes.
While they could not quite get the win this evening, Salem will be back in action shortly as they take on Saint Thomas Aquinas for their final home match of the season on October 26th at 5 pm.
