SALEM, West Virginia - On an unseasonably warm fall day in north central West Virginia, The Salem University men's soccer team played host to the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks. The game was hard fought the whole way, and resulted in a 1-1 draw.Â
In the first half, neither team was able to find the back of the net despite multiple scoring chances. Strong play from both the Tigers' and the Redhawks' defensive units kept the game in a 0-0 tie going into halftime.Â
After the intermission, disaster struck when Roberts Wesleyan drew first blood with a goal just moments of the second period. Undaunted, Salem pushed even hard to bring the game back level. They found that scoring chance off the foot of Ben Lam, who capitalized from a deflected shot by Felipe Gonzalez to put one in the bottom corner of the net for the Tigers. After drawing level again, Salem had their work cut out for them as they had to play a large portion of the final moments of the game down a man. They were up to the task however, and strong defensive play from Ruben Pijlman in goal kept the Redhawks at bay the rest of the way. The game ended in the 1-1 draw.Â
On the stats sheet, the clear leader was Ben Lam and Felipe Gonzalez who teamed up for the Tigers lone goal of the afternoon. In goal, Ruben Pijlman had a great game with 6 saves, with the final one coming just seconds before the final whistle to preserve the 1-1 scoreline.Â
This was the first and final true home contest for the Tigers as they are slated for 4 straight road matches to end the season. They will face off with Penn State - Beaver in their next outing on October 24th at 3 PM in Monaca, Pennsylvania.
