Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Kaden Shoaf

Salem Defeats Emory & Henry 1-0

EMORY, Virginia - After the women's team had a tough afternoon in the first contest of the day, the Salem men's soccer team matched up with the Emory & Henry College Wasps in the second leg of the day's doubleheader in Virginia. Much like the first game of the day, the scoring chances were few and far between, but the Tigers came up with one big goal to come away with the 1-0 win.

In the first half, Salem had a tough time offensively as neither team could seem to breach the other's defenses. A defensive battle ensued, and a hard fought 0-0 scoreline would hold into the second half.

After the break, Salem would finally find a good chance to break the tie as a Wasps miscue would bring Mauricio Aguillar Renovales to the penalty spot. He made the most of that opportunity, and Salem would take the 1-0 lead at the 70th minute mark. From there, the Salem backline played valiantly as they held a furious Wasp comeback bid at bay for the final 20 minutes giving Salem the 1-0 win.

On the stats sheet, the clear bright spot was the Renovales goal from the penalty spot. Andrea Fincato and Guillherme Benites also had strong days offensively. Defensively, Ben Lam and Olawaseun Babarinde led the Tigers backline to a shutout of the Wasps. In goal, Ruben Pijlman logged 3 saves.

Salem will be looking to keep up the winning ways in their next contest on November 3rd as they travel to Raleigh, North Carolina to take on the Shaw Bears for a 2 pm kickoff.
