EDINBORO, Pennsylvania - After two tough exhibitions with NCAA Division I programs to lead off the fall campaign, the Salem women's basketball program finally got a chance to properly tip off their regular season against the Edinboro Fighting Scots on the road. Salem played well, but fell by a score of 80-58
In the first quarter, Salem had their work cut out for them early on as the Scots jumped out to an early lead. Salem answered back with some strong outside shooting from Aina Maynou towards the end of the period, but the Scots held a 27-15 advantage going into the 2nd quarter.Â
In that second period, Salem continued to struggle to keep pace with Edinboro offensively as the Scots lead ballooned to as much as 24 points. Elena Pericic and Kirsten Cross would find some buckets for the Tigers late in the quarter, but Salem would trail 46-23 going into the locker room for the halftime intermission.Â
After the break, head coach Jessica Peatross clearly made some key adjustments, and the Tigers started to whittle down the Edinboro lead throughout the third period. Salem can credit their 3rd quarter rally to some strong shooting from Anete Bluma and Liliani Krause, but the Scots maintained a sizable 22 point lead as the game entered the final frame.Â
In the fourth, Salem tried to kick the offense into high gear in order to claw their way back into the contest. However, the Edinboro defense was stifling, and the Tigers found the scoring chances few and far between, as they had most of the night. Anna Machykova spearheaded the late Salem rally, but it would be the Scots on top at the final whistle by a score of 80-58.Â
On the stats sheet, it was Liliani Krause who led the way for the Tigers with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and an assist. Anete Bluma tied Krause in points with 9, and added 1 rebound and a steal.Â
The Tigers will face off with yet another PSAC foe this weekend as they are slated to meet up with Gannon on Sunday, November 13th at 5 PM in Erie, Pennsylvania.
