ERIE, Pennsylvania - After a tough night offensively stifled the Salem women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon, they hoped to get back on track on Sunday against Gannon in Erie. While the Tigers were still unable to pick up the win, an impressive performance from Nerea Arambarri Fernandez kept the Tigers in the game from whistle to whistle.Â
In the first period, Salem stayed neck and neck with Gannon, and the game settled into a defensive battle. Both teams would only score 9 points in the period, and Salem's big scoring plays came from Anete Bluma and Emerson Wells towards the end of the quarter.Â
For the second quarter, it was more of the same as both teams continued to trade scoring runs back and forth. However, it would be Gannon that held a slight 24-21 lead going into the intermission.Â
In the third, Gannon found their scoring groove, and the scoring chances seemed to dry up for the Tigers. That is for everyone, but Nerea Arambarri Fernandez. She hit multiple big shots for Salem, and kept the Tigers within striking distance. Gannon held the contest, however, by a score 54-36.Â
In the final period, the Salem comeback was on as continued hot shooting from Arambarri Fernandez. Daniela Quesada also played well for the Tigers in the final frame, but Gannon would hold on to pull away with a 75-62 win.Â
On the stats sheet, the clear star of the game was Nerea Arambarri Fernandez. She led the Tigers with 29 points, 6 rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Daniela Quesada also had a strong showing with 11 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals for the Tigers.Â
While tonight did not go the Salem way, the Salem women's basketball team will be back in action on Wednesday, November 16th at local rival Alderson Broaddus at 5:30 PM.
