Nutter Fort, WV – Salem University baseball split the day against California University of Pennsylvania, taking game one 8-2 and dropping the second 7-6.
Game One
The Tigers were led by Jared Palmyra, Scott Kondroik, Trey Hissam, and Kobie Carpenter with two hits each. Frankie Clearly led the Tigers on the mound, throwing the complete game giving up five hits, two runs and striking out five.
Kondroik hit a two out double to right center to get in scoring position in the bottom of the first. Alex Harper followed with a single to left field to bring in the Tigers first run. The Tigers extended their lead to 5-0 in the second. Conor Bardue led off the inning with a single followed by a single from Hissam and a bunt from Carpenter to load the bases. Brett Ehr hit the sacrifice fly to bring one across the plate for the Tigers. Palmyra singled to left field to advance the runners and Hissam scored on a Cal U miscue. Kondroik brought in two more with a double to left field. Cal U added two in the sixth before the Tigers answered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning. With a runner on second, Tyler Shinn homered to left field to bring in two for the Tigers. Palmyra followed Shinn with a homer of his own to left center to give the Tigers the 8-2 lead.
Game Two
Cal U struck first in game two, scoring three runs in the first and another in the third to take the 4-0 lead. The Tigers got on the board in the fifth, scoring two. Carpenter walked to lead off the inning followed by a single from Shinn and Palmyra to load the bases. Palmyra later scored on a passed ball followed by Shinn scoring on a ground out by Harper to cut the lead 4-2. The Tigers cut the lead to one after Ehr singled on a bunt to third to bring Brandon Gray home. The Tigers took the 6-4 lead after a three-run homerun from Shinn. Cal U answered with three in the top of the seventh to take back the lead and 7-6 victory over Salem.
