Salem, WV – Salem University baseball went 1-2 over the weekend after hosting Alderson Broaddus, Wheeling and Mercyhurst University.
In game one of the weekend, the Tigers collected seven hits in their 10-8 victory over Alderson Broaddus University. After going into the third inning down by two, the Tigers brought two across the plate to even the score. After two back-to-back walks from Brett Ehr and Kobie Carpenter, Alex Harper flew out the right field to bring Ehr home. Brett Graham doubled later in the inning to bring Carpenter home for the second run for the Tigers. The Tigers ran away with the lead after scoring seven in the fifth inning. Graham and Nathan Kuhn led off the inning with a walk followed by a single from Easy Goita to load the bases. Trey Hissam drew a walk to bring in the first run of the inning. Later in the inning a walk from Goita and Scott Kondroik, Graham and Goita hit by pitch brought in four to extend the lead 10-3. The Battlers rallied to score five in the last two innings to pull withing two but could not come back from the previous deficit. Alden Halfinger got the win for the Tigers after going five innings, giving up five hits, three runs, two walks and three strikeouts.
The Tigers fell in game two against Wheeling University 16-6 on Saturday. After two scoreless innings, Salem took the 2-0 lead off of a two-run homerun to left field from Graham. Wheeling answered, scoring 11 in the next three innings to go ahead 11-2. Going into the ninth down 16-3, the Tigers put up three before falling to Wheeling 16-6.
In the final game of the weekend, the Tigers fell to Mercyhurst University 13-3. Mercyhurst jumped out to an early lead after scoring three in the first and the third. The Tigers scored one in the second inning after a lead off single up the middle from Graham followed by a double from Kuhn to bring one across the plate. Kondroik brought in a run in the third to pull within four of the Lakers. The Lakers added three more in the sixth and another in the seventh before the Tigers scored their final run of the game. Luis Angarita led off the seventh with a double down the left field line followed by two hit by pitches to load the bases. A ground out from Carpenter to the right side was enough to bring home Angarita to make the score 10-3. The Lakers were able to add three more in the ninth to come away with the 13-3 victory over the Tigers.
