CHARLESTON, West Virginia - Despite a tough day down in Charleston yesterday, the Salem volleyball program had a great chance to get on track. They were scheduled for the second doubleheader of the weekend today as they faced off with Virginia State for a rare early morning tilt, and then met Bloomsburg in the evening contest. Despite battling hard in both contests, the Tigers fell twice. The games played out as follows:
Virginia State 3, Salem 0
In game 1, Salem got out to a great start as they fought for control of the first set, and they even got up to a 21-13 lead. Unfortunately, Virginia State rallied back to even the score at 22. After trading points down the stretch, Salem would come up just short at 26-24. In the subsequent sets, Salem struggled to keep up with the Trojans offensively, and fell behind early in each as Virginia State cruised to the 3-0 win. On the bright side for the Tigers, Kiley Roberts played well with 18 digs in the contest.Â
Bloomsburg 3, Salem 0
In game 2, the contest played out very similarly to the Friday contests against Charleston and Belmont Abbey. In the first set, Bloomsburg jumped out to a quick 25-11 win. After that, Salem battled in the next two sets to even the score, but could not quite get over the hump in both. Bloomsburg concluded the Tigers time at the invitational with another 3-0 loss. However, there is always a silver lining for the Tigers. In this case, it was Makhia Hinton as she recorded 13 digs, 3 kills, and 1 block.Â
Even though the results on the scoreboard for Salem were less than ideal, this season is far from over. Salem will head up to Johnstown, Pennsylvania for their next contest on Tuesday, September 13 for a road contest with the Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats at 6 pm.
