Salem Earns First Win of the Season over Lincoln

BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia  - As the central West Virginia fall has not been kind to the playing surface at Catalano Stadium, the Salem women's soccer program was able to take the field after a lengthy break against the Lincoln University Lions at the Bridge Sports Complex. The Tigers utilized an excellent first half to earn 2-0 victory, which was their first of the season.

In the first half, the Tigers got off to a great start just 2 minutes into the contest when Julia Munoz - Delgado was able to find the back of the net when a Lions goalkeeper miscue put the ball at her feet with a wide open net in front of her. She tapped the ball in to give the Tigers control of the game. Later in the half, free kick specialist Ana Luiza Ferrante was able to capitalize on a free kick just outside of the box with an arching shot that floated in just outside the reach of the Lions goalkeeper. That brought the score up to 2-0, and Salem would hold that lead going into the half.

In the second half, the Tigers defense took center stage as they looked to protect their lead against the Lincoln frantic offensive attack. Salem held strong, and controlled the game the rest of the way for the 2-0 victory.

On the stats sheet, the star of the show was clearly Julia Munoz - Delgado who had 3 shots on goal on top of her early goal in the contest. From the goalkeepers position, Chloe Owens and Alexandra Issard both played well and earned a clean sheet as a unit.

After the successful afternoon in Bridgeport, the Salem women's soccer program will not have much time to enjoy their victory as they are back in action on the road this weekend. They are slated for a rematch with Bluefield State on the road on Sunday, September 18th at 3 pm.
