CHARLESTON, West Virginia - In search of another alternate field due to the soggy conditions at Catalano Stadium, the Salem men's soccer team headed down to Charleston for their scheduled home match against King University. The Tigers played well, and came home with a tough 2-1 win over King.Â
In the first half, the Tigers got off to a great start when a long crossing pass from Samir Doullouz found its way to Ionut Rares Gaspar, who headed it into the back of the net to help the Tigers take control of the game early. They rode out that 1-0 lead into the halftime break. The Tigers faced a tough task of holding off the Tornado advances while trying to maintain their lead. Fortunately, Andrea Fincato added a goal for the Tigers from the penalty spot after a Tornado miscue in the box sent him to the spot. After the 2-0, Salem played strong defense down the stretch, and despite allowing a late goal, pulled away with a strong 2-1 over King.
Statistically, the aforementioned Andrea Fincato and Ionut Rares Gaspar lead the way with 1 goal a piece. Additionally, Ruben Pijlman can credit a strong Tiger backline in front of him for his one save in goal as they only allowed King 2 shots on goal in the contest.Â
After this win, Salem will be looking to continue their winning ways when the Maine-Fort Kent Bengals come to town for a 7 PM contest on Sunday, September 25th.
