FAIRMONT, West Virginia - Another week and another round of rainfall across has made the field at Catalano Stadium unplayable. Therefore, the Salem women's soccer program had to find yet another new place to play for their scheduled home contest with Maine-Fort Kent. Luckily, the turf field at Fairmont State's Duvall-Rosier Field was available, and Salem moved the contests just a few exits up I-79. Unfortunately, Salem had a difficult day offensively and fell to the Bengals 4-0.
In the first half, Maine-Fort Kent jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, and the pressure was on for the Tigers to find scoring opportunities. However, strong defensive play from Virginia Vogt and Natalie Jaramillo kept the Tigers in the contest. Neither team was able to find a real groove, and the 1-0 lead for the Bengals would hold into the halftime intermission.
In the second half, the difficulties began for the Tigers. After the Bengals added one more goal, disaster struck when a pair of own goals from the Salem backline pushed the Bengal lead to 4-0. With that big lead, the Tigers simply ran out of time to make their comeback and fell by that same score of 4-0.
While today did not go the way they would have hoped, the Salem women's soccer team will be back in action on the road in Greeneville, Tennessee to take on the Tusculum University Pioneers for a 2 PM contest on Saturday, October 1st.
