Salem Foiled by Late Goals at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, West Virginia - After a tough day on the turf in Bridgeport, the Salem women's soccer program headed up to West Liberty for a Saturday afternoon contest with the Hilltoppers. Salem played well the whole way, but a late West Liberty goal dashed the Salem chances for their first win of the season.

In the first half, the Salem defense started off well, and kept the Hilltopper offensive attack at bay despite allowing for 9 West Liberty shooting attempts. The Tiger backline would hold fast, and neither team would make any dent in the scoresheet before the intermission.

After the break, it was more of the same. The Hilltoppers created many scoring chances, but Salem kept each at bay, excpt for a lone goal in the 76th minute that found its way past Salem goalkeeper Chloe Owens. In a frantic bid to even the score from the Tigers, the Hilltopers were able to add one more goal in the final moments of the game on the counter attack. Those two goals were enough for West Liberty to pull away with a hard fought 2-0 victory.

On the stats sheet, Salem had a few strong points. The aforementioned Chloe Owens had 8 saves on 16 shots faced. Aniiyah Peeples and Natalie Jaramillo would also play well for the Tigers, and created the few scoring chances the Tigers found.

After this loss, the Tigers will have their next opportunity to get into the win column when the Lincoln University Lions come to Catalano Stadium for a 3 pm start on September 14th.
