Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | John Raley

Tigers Suffer Injuries in Tough Loss

SALEM,WV- Last night Salem hosted the Concord Mountain Lions for a regular season volleyball matchup. Salem entered the match with a record of 5-12 while the mountain lions came in at 14-6.

The first set began with some back-and-forth between the two teams before Concord's offense heated up and took the Mountain Lions on a 5-0 run. This pushed the lead to five for them, but Salem didn't go away. Before the lead got out of hand the Tigers trimmed the deficit back down to two. After that Concord elevated their game to another level. They ended the set on a 14-1 run to claim the first set 25-7.

The second set was a different story. Both teams fought tooth and nail to stay in it with neither one giving any ground. The Tigers got bit pretty hard by the injury bug as they lost Grace Deller to a knee injury and temporarily lost Nakyia Middleton to a finger injury. Salem was also playing without captain, Valentina Poti. As the injuries piled up so did the deficit for the Tigers. They seemingly ran out of steam in the second set as they dropped it 25-19.

The third set began with Salem on top. They jumped out to a strong 7-4 lead against the Mountain Lions and looked to be back in the drivers seat on their home court. Unfortunately, Concord stole all that momentum from the Tigers. The Mountain Lions ripped off a 7-2 run to take the lead from Salem. The Tigers were able to remain competitive the remainder of the set, but they could not close the gap and get the win in set number three. Concord emerged victorious, winning three sets in a row.

The Salem Tigers will be back in action this morning at 11am as they are set to square off against Glenville State in Salem, WV.
