BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - After a late goal turned the Tigers away from Elkins with a draw, the Salem men's soccer team returned home for a rematch with the Hilltoppers of West Liberty on Wednesday evening. The previous match ended in a 1-1 draw on the road, and the home rubber match ended in much the same way, with a 2-2 draw. The contest played out as follows:
Salem and West Liberty opened up with a very tightly contested see-saw of a game. Both teams traded runs for the majority of the first half, but West Liberty would sneak in a goal just before the halftime break.Â
In the second, Salem battled back to level the score with a goal from Valentin Fritz shortly after the game restarted. West Liberty added a goal of their own in response, but with just moments to go in the contest, Andrea Fincato leveled the score at 2-2 with one more goal for Salem. In the final minutes, both teams furiously kept the pressure on to break the deadlock, but to no avail. The final result ended up with a 2-2 draw between the Tigers and Hilltoppers.Â
On the score sheet, Salem was led offensively by the goals from Fincato and Fritz. Enzo Lira De Paula and David Teruel Nuno each added assists on those goals. In goal, Ryan Schneider added 3 saves.
Salem will be looking to push past the draws and get into the win column this weekend when they head down to Buckhannon. The West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats will host the Tigers on Sunday, October 8th at 7 PM.
