BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - Blustery and wet conditions at The Bridge Sports Complex set the stage for the Salem's doubleheader against the Malone University Pioneers. The rough weather conditions made play difficult for both teams, and Salem ended up splitting the series with the Pioneers. The games played out as follows:
Salem 1, Malone 0
In Game 1, the field conditions were at their worst as the game with strong winds and drizzling rain. That made for a tough offensive game for both teams, and Salem was able to utilize the pitching prowess of Meesha Arroyo to perfection. She allowed just one hit in her complete game shutout. For the lone run of the game, it would be Arroyo again playing the hero. Arroyo opened up the bottom of the 4th inning with a double. She then made it home shortly thereafter on a Ricki Garay sacrifice fly to right field. With that tight lead, Salem maintained that tight lead thanks to Arroyo in the pitcher's circle, and rode out the contest to a 1-0 win.Â
Malone 4, Salem 2
In Game 2, Salem got off to an excellent start as the weather started to clear in Bridgeport. Eliana Esteban and Meladie opened the bottom of the first with a pair of singles. Esteban then scored on a Jazmyn Moetului single, and Ricki Garay brought around LaRance on a groundout. With that 2-0 lead, Salem went back to Andrea Gallegos in the pitcher's circle to protect that lead, and she initially pitched well. However, Malone rallied with a three run home run in the 5th, and another run in the 6th to control the game 4-2. Salem was unable to put together enough offense to make a comeback bid, and they split the series with the Pioneers.Â
While today did not fully go the Salem way, they will take a 3-1 record into their next series. They are set for a doubleheader with the Hilltoppers of West Liberty on Tuesday, February 28th on the road. First pitch of those contests is set for 2 PM.
