BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - The Salem University softball team and head coach Steve Potts had a busy week in front of them with a total of 6 contests on the docket across 3 days. First, they headed to Takoma Park, Maryland to take on the Washington Adventist Shock. The very next day, they played host to Kentucky State. Salem swept the road twinbill with the Shock, and then split the home series with the Thorobreds.Â
Salem 7, Washington Adventist 1
In Game 1 on Tuesday, Salem started off the game with Syriah Trujillo drove in a run on a single. They then added a second run in the 3rd inning when a Shock error allowed Kaydee Anderson to score from third. The lead then extended to 6-0 favoring the Tigers in the 4th and 5th innings. Sierra Chapa drove in a run with an RBI single in the 5th, and Meesha Arroyo added a three home run shot in the 6th. Syriah Trujillo followed Arroyo's example with another home run for the Tigers in the 7th to kick the advantage up to 7-0. The Shock responded with a small rally in the 7th to make it 7-1, but it was too little too late. Salem ran away with a dominant 7-1 win. The Tigers benefitted from a great pitching performance from Meesha Arroyo who logged 5 strikeouts in the complete game win.
Salem 13, Washington Adventist 3
For Game 2 on Tuesday, Salem uncorked another offensive firework show. They notched a total of 13 runs on 9 hits overall. Of those 9 hits, Victoria Castro, Jazmyn Moetului, and Ricki Garay all added doubles, and Syriah Trujillo even reached home on a Shock error that allowed her to circle the bases all on one play. The Salem offensive explosion was paired with a strong outing in the pitcher's circle from Andrea Gallegos. She struck out 2 Shock batters, and allowed just 5 hits in a complete game win.
Salem 5, Kentucky State 0
After returning home for the afternoon doubleheader against Kentucky State, Salem got another shutout performance from Meesha Arroyo in a 5-0 victory over the Thorobreds. Arroyo struck out 2 in the complete game shutout win, and she doubled down with a strong day at the plate. She opened up the scoring for the Tigers with a three run home run in the 4th inning. The Tigers added 2 more runs in the 6th. The first was thanks to a passed ball that allowed Victoria Castro to score from third. Syriah Trujillo then added the final run of the game shortly thereafter when she advanced on a Meladie LaRance groundout.Â
Kentucky State 5, Salem 3
For Game 2 in Bridgeport, Kentucky State struck first with 4 of their 5 runs in the first three innings. The Tigers battled back with a 4th inning rally. That comeback rally was started with a Ricki Garay RBI single. Right after that, Salem executed a well planned double steal play to allow Jazmyn Moetului to score from third. They added one more on a Alyvia Pittman sacrifice fly that brought in Garay. However, that is where the Salem offensive well ran dry, and the comeback bid fell flat. Therefore, Kentucky State took the final game 5-3.Â
While one might think that the Tigers had already had a full week, they still have one more matchup on the schedule this week. They are set to head over to Philippi to take on local rivals Alderson Broaddus for a 3 PM doubleheader on Thursday, March 30th.
