DUBOIS, Pennsylvania - Even though the season has been on a prolonged hiatus due to some weather cancellations since late April, the Salem softball team finally got back onto the field today in the USCAA World Series. In the first round of that event, Salem was matched up with Penn State-Mont Alto. The Tigers faced some early adversity, but rode a 5th inning to a well earned 7-3 win.
PSU-Mont Alto took early control with 2 runs in the 3rd and 4th innings. Salem got back into the game in the 4th when Jazmyn Moetului made her way home off of a Mackenzie Ringer groundout. That run primed the big Salem rally in the next inning. The Tigers gained their initial lead off of a Kaydee Anderson single that scored both Sierra Chapa and Meladie LaRance. Then, Jazmyn Moetului singled to bring in Anderson. Meesha Arroyo continued the single streak with another to score Ricki Garay and Moetului to make it 6-2. Penn State-Mont Alto battled back with a run in the next inning, but Salem put the final touches on their win in the 6th when Alyvia Pittman scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-3. The Tigers held onto that advantage through the end of the game, and Salem earned their advancement in the USCAA Small College World Series. From the pitcher's circle, Andrea Gallegos got the win, but her and starter Meesha Arroyo both pitched just over 3 innings for the Tigers.
While the Tigers know they will continue their stay in Dubois, they do not currently know their opponent. They take on the winner of Florida National and the Mississippi University of Women on Tuesday, May 16th at 2 PM.
