SALEM, West Virginia - In the 6th and final Salem Athletics home event this week, the Salem Tigers volleyball team played host to the Frostburg State Bobcats for a Thursday evening contest. The Tigers had their moments, but it would ultimately be the Bobcats who came away with the 3-0 victory.
For the opening set, Salem trailed early on, but battled back with some strong inside/outside play from Noemi Combi and Hailey Haynes. Salem kept the pressure on, and even strung together a pair of three point runs late in the set. Yet, it would not be enough to overcome the Bobcats, and Salem fell 25-17 in set 1.
In set 2, the period opened with Frostburg State jumping out to the early lead. Salem returned with a run of their own in response driven by some key kills from Valentina Poti. However, the Bobcats were simply too hot to handle offensively for the Tigers, so Salm conceded set 2 25-14.
For the final frame, the contest remained close throughout the set with both teams trading slim leads for much of the set. Jocelyn Rios and Arianna Parsley played well for the Tigers, but a Bobcat surge towards the end of the frame spelled doom for the Tigers. Therefore, Salem dropped set 3 25-17, and subsequently the match 3-0.
On the stats sheet, Salem got the majority of their scoring off of Noemi Combi, who led the Tigers with 8 kills, and Arianna Parsley racked up 9 assists in the contest. Defensively, Mikaela McEvoy tallied 10 digs to lead Salem.'
While not the result the Tigers wanted, Salem will get another crack at the Bobcats in just about 24 hours. Salem heads up to Frostburg State for their next contest on October 4th for the rubber match that is scheduled for 7 PM in Frostburg, Maryland.
