BLOOMINGTON, Indiana - With a fresh win under their belt, the Salem women's water polo team headed over to Bloomington, Indiana this weekend to compete in the Indiana Classic. Salem faced some of the toughest competition in the country yet again in another tough weekend slate. However, the Tigers were bested in all 4 contests this time around. Each contest played out as follows:
Iona 15, Salem 13 (OT)
Salem opened the weekend with a doozy of a matchup. Salem locked horns with the Gaels of Iona, and found themselves in a competitive back and forth contest from the opening whistle. Salem fell behind early, but battled back with a clutch 4th quarter performance. Salem trailed 10-8 entering the 4th, but rallied to knot the game up at 11 with a Emma Donnelly goal with just 4 seconds to go in regulation. In the subsequent overtime periods, Salem again fell behind early, but launched one last comeback bid. Unfortunately, the Tigers could not make that one stick, and Iona came away with the 15-13 overtime win. Offensively, Salem was led by Emma Donnelly with 3 goals. 3 other Tigers tied with 2 goals, namely Taeghen Hack, Iris Oudshoorn, and Courtney Repinz. In goal, Emily Low made 11 saves for the Tigers.Â
Michigan 17, Salem 1
The Tigers were much less fortunate in the next contest on Saturday afternoon. Salem rematched with the Michigan Wolverines for the second time this season. The offensive opportunities were few and far between in this one for the Tigers. Salem got their lone goal from Taeghen Hack in the second period, and the combination of Lorelai Weaver and Emily combined for 4 saves on the day.
California Baptist 24, Salem 9
To open play on Sunday, Salem took on a tough California Baptist squad. Unfortunately, this was another tough day for the Tigers offensively. Salem fell behind early, but kept the pressure on with a pair of Morgan Riordan goals late in the first half. The second half saw Salem mount a comeback bid, but it was too little too late for the Tigers. Salem fell by a score of 24-9. On the scoresheet, Salem was led by a trio of Tigers with 2 goals a piece, namely Mackenzie Hamilton, Courtney Repinz, and Morgan Riordan. In goal, Emily Low chipped in 3 saves.
Indiana 18, Salem 6
For the final contest of the event, Salem took on the host Indiana Hoosiers in another rematch from earlier this season. This one did not go the Tiger's way either however. Salem's offensive woes reared their ugly heads again in the first half, but the Tigers made a valiant effort for the rally in the second half. It again would be too little too late for Salem, and the Tigers were sent home with the 18-6 loss. Statistically, Salem was led by a pair of goals from Taeghen Hack, and Emily Low logged 11 saves in the net for the Tigers.Â
Salem will be looking to get back on track in their next round of contests after a short hiatus. They head up to the Washington & Jefferson Invitational in Washington, PA on March 2nd and 3rd.
