WASHINGTON, Pennsylvania - After a brief hiatus, the Salem women's water polo program got back in the water this weekend in Washington, Pennsylvania. The Tigers faced off with the host team, Washington and Jefferson, and familiar WWPA foe Gannon. Salem shook off the rust and played well in both contests to earn the doubleheader split. Each contest played out as follows:
Salem 18, Washington & Jefferson 11
For Game 1, Salem faced off with the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson. The Tigers fell behind with a slow start in the first, but then stormed back with a strong 5 goal second quarter to take control of the game. Salem then pushed the game out of reach for the Presidents by keeping the offensive attack firing throughout the second half. The Tigers dropped in 11 goals in the final 2 frames, and pulled away with the 18-11 victory. Individually, Salem was led by 4 goals from Emma Donnelly. 4 different Tigers finished with 3 goals each, namely Taeghen Hack, Mackenzie Hamilton, JoJo DeSalvo, and Iris Oudshoorn. Courtney Repinz also had a pair of goals for Salem.Â
Gannon 9, Salem 8
For Game 2, Salem took on WWPA foe Gannon. This contest ended up being a defensive battle from the opening whistle. The teams traded pairs of goals in the first, but then Salem took a 1 goal lead in the 2nd quarter. The third was another wash by both teams scoring twice, and Salem went into the 4th with a tight 7-6 ballgame. However, Gannon was able to secure the win via a 4th quarter comeback to send Salem home with the doubleheader split. The offensive leader for the Tigers was Iris Oudshoorn, who finished with 3 of Salem's 8 goals.Â
The Tigers will get back in action in their next contest on March 9th at 9 AM when they hit the road to play Villanova.
