Salem Celebrates Senior Day Against Notre Dame College

BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - A rainy start to the day was not enough to dampen the spirits in Bridgeport today as the Salem softball team celebrated Senior Day ahead of their home matchup with the Notre Dame College Falcons. 7 Tigers were honored just before first pitch by head coach Steve Potts' squad: namely Syriah Trujillo, Andrea Gallegos, Sierra Chapa, Meladie LaRance, Ricki Garay, Jessica Croghan and graduate assistant coach Meesha Arroyo. After the festivities, Salem played a couple of close games with the Falcons, but came up short both times. Each contest played out as follows:

Notre Dame College 4, Salem 3

For Game 1, Salem trailed initially, but answered right away in the second inning. After back to back singles in that inning from Abigail Harki and Syriah Trujillo. Then, a big 2 RBI double from Kayla Williams got the Tigers back in front. The Falcons stormed back with the 3 runs in the 4th, and the Tigers found themselves needing another rally to get back in the game. They found the beginnings of one in the 5th when Jazmyn Moetului knocked an RBI double to close the gap to 4-3. However, that is where things dried up for the Tigers, and Notre Dame College held on for the 4-3 win. In the pitcher's circle, starter Andrea Gallegos pitched well for the Tigers, and Kendall Lemley also made an appearance in relief.

Notre Dame College 10, Salem 1

For Game 2, Salem fell behind again initially, but battled back to knot things up at 1-1 in the second when Ricki Garay was able to score when Meladie LaRance reached on a fielder's choice. Unfortunately, that would be where the scoring ended for the Tigers, and Notre Dame College put things out of reach with a 7 run 5th inning to end the contest at 10-1 favoring the Falcons. The Salem pitching staff of starter Brooke Wise, Kayla Williams, Kendall Lemley, and Andrea Gallegos combined for 5 strikeouts in the game.

Despite the tough conclusion to Senior Day, Salem still has quite a bit of their season left to right the ship. They hit the road for their next round of contests on April 20th against the Concord Mountain Lions. First pitch for that doubleheader is set for 2 PM in Athens, West Virginia.
