ATHENS, West Virginia - The Salem softball team was the lone Tiger program competing on the road today when they headed down to Athens, West Virginia to take on the Concord Mountain Lions. Despite taking some initial strides, the Tigers were unable to overcome the Mountain Lions' home field advantage in either contest. Each on played out as follows:
Concord 8, Salem 2
In Game 1, Salem came out hot. Sierra Chapa got things going with a leadoff bunt single, and then she was able to make it home when Ricki Garay reached on a Concord error. The Mountain Lions jumped right back out in front though with a 5 run bottom of the first, so Salem needed to get their rally caps on. It took them some time, but there was the beginnings of that rally in the 6th. Sierra Chapa started it off by reaching on another Concord error, and then Kaydee Anderson added to the momentum with a single. Brooke Wise then came up and hit into a groundout, but was able to give Chapa enough time to score from third. Unfortunately, Salem could not add any more runs to that, and Salem fell 8-2. In the pitcher's circle, starter Brooke Wise and reliever Andrea Gallegos combined to strike out 5 Concord batters in the contest.Â
Concord 6, Salem 0
In Game 2, the Tigers struggled to get the offense going. After Concord took the lead with home runs in the first and second, Salem needed to lock down defensively and work their way back into the game. They were able to quiet the Mountain Lions' offense, but were unable to get much going for themselves. With just 4 hits in the contest, it was just not in the cards for Salem today, and they fell in Game 2 6-0. Despite the loss, Salem got some strong work in the pitcher's circle from reliever Kayla Williams and starter Destiny Coble, who combined for a pair of strikeouts in the contest.Â
Despite the setbacks today, Salem can set things right again tomorrow afternoon when they continue their road swing up at rival Glenville State. That doubleheader is set for a 1 PM start on Sunday, April 21st in Glenville, West Virginia.
