BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - With their dominant win over Shaw on Monday, the Salem Tigers men's soccer team did not have any time to rest on their laurels. They played host to local rival Davis & Elkins College for a late night kickoff at The Bridge Sports Complex on Wednesday night. Salem defended the home turf well, but ultimately fell by a 3-0 final scoreline to the Senators.
In the first half, Salem controlled the pace of play early on, and gave the Senators numerous issues offensively. However, it would be Davis & Elkins who drew first blood with 2 quick goals as the first half progressed. Salem stopped the bleeding however, and maintained a tight defensive approach the rest of the half to go into the break with a 2-0 deficit to overcome.
In the second, Salem needed to ratchet up the pressure in order to find the offensive chances to get back into this game. However, Salem simply could not find the back of the net despite some strong attacking play from Aldair Cardenas and Josue Villegas. As the game progressed, the pressure on the Tigers climbed to get onto the scoreboard to get back into the game. Unfortunately, it would be the Senators who added a final goal in the waning seconds of the game on the counter attack to spoil the Tigers home return with a 3-0 final score.
On the stats sheet, Salem found the majority of their scoring chances off the foot of Josue Villegas who logged three shots for the Tigers. In goal, Josh Hills added a pair of saves in the match for Salem.
The Tigers will continue their home stand this weekend with another contest at The Bridge Sports Complex. This time they will play host to the West Liberty Hilltoppers for a 2 PM contest on Sunday, September 15th.
