BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - On a sunny Sunday afternoon at The Bridge, the Salem Tigers men's soccer team played host to the West Liberty Hilltoppers. Both offenses showed up early and often in the contest with a total of 6 goals scored between both teams. Unfortunately, it was the Hilltoppers who came out ahead by defeating the Tigers 4-2.
In the first half, West Liberty drew first blood with a goal just minutes into the contest. From there, Felipe Gonzalez Maldonado answered right back for Salem with a free kick goal right at the 12 minute mark. The Hilltoppers then added 2 more goals midway through the period, and Salem needed to dig deep to claw their way back in the game.
After the intermission, Aldair Cardenas brought the Tigers closer with a goal in the 56th minute, but it would be West Liberty who found the final goal of the contest just minutes after that to send the Tigers home with a tough 4-2 loss.
From the scorer's table, it was the combination of Maldonado and Cardenas who added the offensive firepower for the Tigers with one goal each. Giancarlo Pardo and Josue Villegas also showed some strong offensive play with a pair of shots on goal each. In goal for Salem, Jason Barrientos logged a lone save for the Tigers.
Perhaps a change of scenery will get the Tigers back on track in their next contest. They will get just that in the form of up to Frostburg State for a mid-week contest against the Bobcats on September 18th at 5 PM.
