SALEM, West Virginia – With the snow continuing to fall in the mountain state, the Salem Tigers women's basketball team returned home for a Saturday afternoon contest against the University of Charleston Golden Eagles. The Tigers are coming off a road loss to the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets and are looking to turn things around. However, Charleston got off to a quick start and did not look back. Charleston defeated Salem by a final score of 70-48.
In the first quarter, Charleston kicked things off with a quick 8-2 run to start the action. Lilliani Krause was able to get two early layups for the Tigers to cut the deficit to 10-4. Charleston would close out the quarter on a 14-7 run and go into the second frame holding a 24-11 lead.
In the second quarter, the Tigers were able to cut the lead down to 9 after a
Cassandra Smith jumper. Salem was more aggressive on the defensive side in the second quarter holding the Golden Eagles to just 12 points. Heading into intermission, Charleston had a 36-25 lead over Salem.
In the third period, the Tigers needed to get off to a good start to cut the lead down. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles would continue to increase their lead after another quick start to the half. Charleston was able to maintain a commanding 56-40 lead as we head into the final period.
In the final quarter, Salem desperately needed to go on a run if they wanted any chance to get back into this one. However, the Golden Eagles would control the ball for majority of the quarter and were able to secure the victory. Charleston defeated Salem 70-48.
On the stats sheet, Lilliani Krause led the way with an impressive 33-point performance on 12-19 from the field.
Cassandra Smith and
Carmen Vasquez led the Tigers in rebounding both grabbing 7 of them.
After the home loss, the Tigers will look to regroup as they prepare for their next home contest. That will take place on January 15
th at 5:30 PM against Frostburg State University.
