Salem Secures Win at Wheeling with Dramatic Comeback

WHEELING, W.Va. — The Salem University men's soccer team secured a victory in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon, rallying from an early deficit to defeat Wheeling 3–2 at Bishop Schmitt Field.

The Tigers (4-7-6) overcame a 2–0 first-half hole with three unanswered goals, highlighted by second-half strikes from Josue Villegas and Valentin Fritz. Salem dominated possession, holding a 61–39% edge, while outshooting the Cardinals 20–12 and earning six corner kicks to Wheeling's one.

Wheeling jumped ahead with goals in the 16th and 26th minutes, but Salem answered before halftime when Gabe Morales finished a cross from Fritz in the 43rd minute to cut the deficit to one.

Villegas leveled the match in the 64th minute off a feed from CJ Branch, and Fritz provided the game-winner in the 83rd minute with an assist from Caleb Christner.

Goalkeeper Selleck Burggraf earned his first collegiate victory, recording five saves while keeping the Cardinals scoreless over the final 64 minutes of play.

Fritz and Villegas each posted four shots on goal, while Christner and Giancarlo Pardo generated multiple chances in the attack. Salem controlled the pace of play throughout the second half, outshooting Wheeling 10–6 after the break.

Now with their second win in a row, the Tigers are set to take on the Point Park Pioneers in their final contest of the regular season on November 5th at 7:30 PM in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
