Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Kaden Shoaf

Tigers' 2nd Half Surge Not Enough to Overcome Cardinals

SALEM, W.Va. — Despite a furious second-half comeback that erased a 20-point deficit, the Salem University men's basketball team came up just short on Saturday afternoon, falling 93–85 to Wheeling inside T. Edward Davis Gymnasium.

Wheeling built a commanding 51–33 halftime lead, capitalizing on efficient outside shooting and 11 first-half three-pointers. But the Tigers refused to let the game get away, erupting for 52 points in the second half and trimming the deficit to as little as four in the final minute.

Tigers' Standouts

Salem's comeback was powered by standout performances from its core:

  • Jamari Gamble delivered a game-high 26 points, adding 10 rebounds for a double-double while attacking the rim throughout the second half.

  • Xavier Price was equally impressive, scoring 23 points and dominating the paint with 10 rebounds and several second-chance buckets.

  • Eman Lawal turned in a huge all-around effort with 15 points and 13 rebounds, including three made threes that fueled Salem's late run.

  • Zahki Fallen added 13 points and hit timely shots during the comeback push.

As a team, Salem shot 50% from the field and scored 38 points in the paint, out-rebounding Wheeling 42–34.

Wheeling Holds On

Wheeling was led by:

  • Caleb Murray – 23 points

  • Ayden Goll – 16 points

  • Jerry Saunders Jr. – 14 points

  • Kris English – 11 points

The Cardinals found success from the perimeter, finishing 11-for-25 from three, and made 28 free throws, which proved decisive in the closing minutes.

Second-Half Surge Falls Short

After trailing by 22 early in the second half, Salem stormed back with defensive stops, transition buckets, and a flurry of scoring from Gamble, Price, and Lawal. A 20–6 run brought the Tigers within 82–78 with just over a minute left.

However, Wheeling's free-throw shooting down the stretch allowed the Cardinals to hold their lead and escape with the win.

The Tigers will not have long to stew on this tough loss as they are back in action on Monday, December 8th at 5 PM against Penn State-Fayette at home in Salem.
