ELKINS, West Virginia - With an unseasonably warm weekend for early February in the Mountain State, the Salem women's basketball team made the trip over to Randolph County this afternoon to take on the Senators of Davis & Elkins College. Salem had some bright spots, but ultimately were outdone by the Senators by a final score of 62-49.
In the first quarter, it was a back and forth contest early on with neither team truly taking control. Kamryn Ruffin and Carmen Vasquez added some much needed scoring late in the period, but the Senators maintained a 16-12 lead after the first.
In the second, The Tigers opened well by leaning on the interior play of Liliani Krause. The Tigers whittled away at the Senator advantage, and got it down to just 1. However, the Senators surged right back to a 35-28 lead going into the halftime break.
After the intermission, Salem built up another solid run to eat away at the Senator lead. Liliani Krause and Kasaya Krause played well in the period, but another push from the Senators set the game up at 50-38 going into the fourth.
In the final frame, Cassandra Smith led one final comeback attempt for the Tigers. It was a valiant effort overall, but Salem would finish just short of their foes by a final score of 62-49.
Statistically, Salem was led by 24 points and 8 rebounds out of Liliani Krause. Carmen Vasquez added a double double performance of her own with 10 points and 10 rebounds as well.
While the road loss is tough for the Tigers, Salem will have to get right back it this week. They remain on the road in their next contest when they take on the Concord Mountain Lions in Athens, West Virginia on Wednesday, February 5th at 5:30 PM.
