ATHENS, West Virginia - In the second phase of their road swing, the Salem women's basketball team faced off with the Concord Mountain Lions down in Athens, West Virginia. Salem had their bright spots, including a career night from Carmen Vasquez, but it was simply not enough to keep up with the Mountain Lions as Salem fell 84-63.
In the first quarter, the Tigers opened the contest by leaning on the interior play of Carmen Vasquez. However, Concord responded with some hot outside shooting, and Salem trailed 11-18 after the first period.Â
In the second, the Tigers began to eat away at the Mountain Lion advantage. Salem got some strong play from Brooklynn Medina, and whittled the lead down to just a single point. However, another Concord push late in the period left the score at 39-25 favoring the Mountain Lions going into the halftime break.Â
Coming out of the intermission, The Tigers went right back to the well with the interior play of Vasquez setting up some outside shooting opportunities for Cassandra Smith. Yet, Concord kept the Tigers at bay, and the scoreline ended up at 61-46 going into the 4th quarter.
In the final frame, Salem launched one final push to get back into the game. Kasaya Krause and Liliani Krause hit some big shots for the Tigers down the stretch, but the deficit was simply too big to overcome. Therefore, Salem fell by a final score of 84-63.
Statistically, Salem got a pair of double double performances. The first was a career night from Carmen Vasquez who finished the game with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Liliani Krause joined her in the double double club with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Cassandra Smith also finished in double figures with 10 points.Â
Even with the loss, Salem will need to be prepared for a big weekend ahead of them. They play host to the Glenville State Pioneers on Saturday, February 8th at 2 PM as part of the UHC Family Medicine Day tripleheader.Â
