CHARLESTON, West Virginia- As the snow returned in the mountain state, the Salem Tigers men's basketball team headed south on I-79 for their next contest in Charleston. The Tigers would look to pull off a major road victory against the Golden Eagles. However, the Tigers slow first half start got them behind the eight ball and were unable to close the deficit in the second half. Charleston ended up taking the victory by a score of 91-84.
In the first half, the Tigers got off to an amazing start going on a 13-4 run to open the first 5 minutes of play. Unfortunately, the lead would not last long as the Golden Eagles would go on a 11-2 run to tie things up at 15 with 13 minutes remaining. Charleston would go on a huge run to close out the first half with a 17-point lead. At intermission, Charleston held a 49-32 lead.
In the second half, Charleston would control the first 5 minutes of play while still maintaining a 57-40 lead over Salem. However,
Daquan Coleman and
Kevin Constant both hit a basket to cut the deficit to 46-57. The Golden Eagles were still able to maintain a double-digit lead across the midway point of the half. With 8:50 remaining, Charleston led 71-61.
Kevin Constant hit a big time three to cut the deficit to single digits for the first time this half. Followed up by a Derrick Jones Jr dunk at the 6:11 mark of the second. Charleston was only up 73-68 at this point. Both teams would trade baskets over the next few minutes as Charleston had a 82-76 lead with just over 2 minutes left. At this point, the Tigers needed to make a run to get the lead back, but unfortunately the Golden Eagles would knock down their free throws to close it out. Charleston secured the 91-84 victory.
On the stats sheet,
Kevin Constant led the way with 24 points on an impressive 8/12 from the field.
Jalen Barnes had 21 points on while going 3/5 from beyond the arc.
Tyree Davis and
Isaac James both had 12 points to round out the Tigers in double figures.
After the road defeat, the Tigers will look to get past this one quick as they prepare for their Saturday contest. That match up will come against the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets at home at 4 pm.
