SALEM, West Virginia- As the wet weather continued across the mountain state, the Salem Tigers men's basketball team was back in action at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium on Saturday evening. The Tigers would face off against the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets would build on a late first half run and cruise to a 107-75 victory over the Tigers.
In the first half, the Tigers got off to an incredible start leading 8-0 after a couple buckets from
Tyree Davis early on. However, the Tigers lead would go away quickly as the Yellow Jackets went on a 14-6 run to tie the score up. The game was knotted up at 14 with just over 13 minutes left in the half. Across the midway point of the first half, the Yellow Jackets grabbed control of the game and led 31-22 with 5:09 remaining in the first. The Tigers needed to make a run to close out the half to regain the lead, but the Yellow Jackets pulled away even more so. At the half, West Virginia State led Salem 45-27.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets got off to a fast start extending the lead to 60-37 with 15:28 left in the game. Salem was able to cut the deficit down to 18 after a
Daquan Coleman triple at the 10:25 mark. The Yellow Jackets still had a commanding 72-54 lead. At this point in the game, the Tigers desperately needed to start chipping into the lead. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets would have complete control of the last 10 minute of play and cruise to a 107-75 victory.
On the stats sheet,
Daquan Coleman led all Tigers with 19 points on 7/16 from the field.
Kevin Constant added 14 points and 5 rebounds.
Tyree Davis rounded out the Tigers scorers in double digits with 12 points and 6 rebounds.
After the loss, the Tigers will look to forget this one quickly and focus on their next contest. Which will happen on Wednesday when they head to Frostburg State for a 7:30 pm match up against the Bobcats.
