BUCKHANNON, West Virginia- Coming off Friday's sweep against Davis & Elkins, the Salem Tigers baseball had an opportunity to keep the momentum going on Saturday. The Tigers would continue the road swing as they traveled down to Buckhannon for an afternoon doubleheader against the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats. Salem was able to leave Buckhannon with a pair of big victories.
In Game 1,
Zack Kendall got the start on the mound for the Tigers. The Tigers bats got going early when
Hunter Rose and
Jose Lojo hit a pair of singles to kick things off. Lojo went onto score after a costly wild pitch by the Bobcats.
Reese Rinna was able to knock in Rose when he hit a sac fly to give the Tigers the 2-0 lead after the 1
st. Wesleyan grabbed a 3-2 lead after a homer and a couple singles in the bottom of the 2
nd. The hitting slowed down for a few innings, until
Hunter Rose hit a solo home run to open the 5
th inning. During the same inning,
Reese Rinna hit a rbi double to bring in
Jacob Hurley. Rinna would go onto score after a costly error by the Bobcats. Salem now held a 5-3 lead. Salem was able to control the last 2 innings and secure the 5-3 victory in game 1.
Conor Thiele earned the win, and
Brian Kendall secured the save.
During Game 2,
Eric Kovach started at pitcher for the Tigers. Salem struck first again when
Jacob Hurley hit a rbi single scoring
Jose Lojo. Wesleyan got the lead after a big bottom of the 1
st including 4 hits and 2 runs. Wesleyan now led 2-1 The Tigers would secure the lead back in the top of the 2
nd after
Hunter Rose hit a rbi single. Moments later,
Jacob Hurley hit a rbi double to give the Tigers the 4-2 edge. In the top of the 3
rd,
Aaron Forbes was able to steal home to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead. The Tigers continued to build on that lead even more after
Ryder Costa scored and Joe Wintermut scored on a wild pitch. The following inning,
Reese Rinna continued his impressive day with a home run. Wesleyan would get another run in the bottom of the 5
th. Salem now led 8-3 as we headed into the 7
th inning and had complete control. Fortunately, the Tigers were able to keep pouring it on after 4 hits and 3 errors were made by the Bobcats. The Tigers took advantage of that and added 6 runs to the total to close things out. Salem defeated Wesleyan by an impressive 14-3 score.
As the Tigers win streak continues, they will look to keep this momentum rolling as they have a week off before their next game. The Tigers improved to 7-11 on the season and will be back in action next Saturday at home vs Glenville State.Â
