NUTTER FORT, West Virginia- Following a long road stretch, the Salem Tigers baseball team returned home for action. The Tigers played host to the Glenville State Pioneers for a Friday afternoon doubleheader. After a strong showing in a game 1 victory, Salem looked to sweep the day. However, Glenville was able to secure the game 2 victory.
Salem 8, Glenville State 0
In game 1,
Sam Schmitt was the starter on the mound. Salem was able to get on the board first in the bottom of the 2
ndafter
Jose Lojo hit a 2 run rbi single.
Aidan McMurdo and
Max Atkinson would get the runs. Schmitt was off to a great start pitching after 4 innings and only 1 hit allowed. The Tigers would extend their lead to 3-0 after a Lojo hit a sac fly.
Max Atkinson scored his second run of the day. In the following inning,
Aaron Forbes hit a big 2 run rbi homer to left field. Moments later,
Joe Wintermute hit a rbi single which scored
Luis Angarita. In the same inning,
Ryder Costa was able to steal home. The Tigers still weren't done scoring in the bottom of the 5
th. Wintermute would get the Tigers 8
th run after a wild pitch from the Pioneers. As we headed into the 6
th, Salem had complete control of this one. The Tigers were able to close out the game and
Sam Schmitt improved his record to 3-1 on the season.
Glenville State 5, Salem 3
In game 2,
Jackson Thoma got the start at pitcher for the Tigers. Glenville would score first in this one after a rbi double. Salem would answer back in the bottom 1
st with a
Jacob Hurley double that scored
Hunter Rose.
Luis Angarita would would follow that up with another rbi double and Hurley getting the run. The Tigers would hold the 2-1 lead for the next few innings. However, the Pioneers would tie the game up with a rbi double in the top of the 4
th. Unfortunately, the following inning Glenville State hit a 3 run homerun to give the Pioneers a 5-2 advantage. In the bottom of the 5
th,
Jose Lojo knocked in a rbi single.
Joe Wintermute would score on the play. Unfortunately, the Tigers were unable to cut into the lead after that. Glenville would close out the game with a 5-3 victory.
After the doubleheader split today, the Tigers will now look to prepare for their next contest. Which will occur on Sunday afternoon in home doubleheader vs Concord. First pitch is set for 1pm at Frank Loria Memorial Field.
