BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - With a tough result on the road on Wednesday, Salem got right back at it in competition at home on Friday afternoon. The Tigers played host to a strong offensive Glenville State team at The Bridge Sports Complex, and unfortunately, it was a long day for the Tigers as they fell in both contests. Each game played out as follows:
Glenville State 8, Salem 2
In Game 1, the game was a pitcher's duel early on with Franchesca Alvaro and Glenville State's Kylie Burdick trading strong innings for the first 3 frames. Glenville State broke the game open with 4 runs in the 4th and 3 runs in the 6th to really put Salem in a tough spot. Salem responded with a 2 run home run off the bat of Kendall Lemley in the 6th, but the Tigers could not build that into a late surge. Therefore, the Tigers fell in Game 1 8-2. In the pitcher's circle, starter Franchesca Alvaro and reliever Destiny Coble combined for a pair of strikeouts in the contest.
Glenville State 7, Salem 3
In Game 2, the Tigers took an early lead when Kaydee Anderson hit into a fielding error by the Pioneers that brought home Abigail Harki. Salem held onto that tight 1-0 lead until the 4th when Glenville State took control at 3-1. The Pioneers added 2 more runs in the 6th, and Salem needed a big late surge to get back into the game. They found the beginnings of that rally when Kaydee Anderson drove in Kendall Lemley on a groundout, but the rally died off there. Glenville added 2 more runs in the 7th, and Salem had one last chance to build that comeback. Bella Ortiz made the most of a Pioneer error with some stellar base running, and Abigail Harki drove her home on an RBI single. However, the comeback bid died off there, and Salem fell 7-3. In the pitcher's circle, starter Kendall Lemley and reliever Brooke Wise combined for 4 strikeouts in the contest.
While the results today were not in Salem's favor, the Tigers will need to have a short memory as they are back in action on Saturday, April 19th at 2 PM for a home contest against the Concord Mountain Lions.
