NUTTER FORT, West Virginia- As the season comes closer to the finish line, the Salem Tigers baseball team returned home for the last full home series of the year. Salem celebrated Senior Day by honoring their 10 seniors on Sunday against the Frostburg State Bobcats. In the series, Frostburg controlled the start of it taking the first 3 games. However, Salem was able to get the last victory to avoid the sweep.
Frostburg State 6, Salem 3
In the first game on Saturday,
Sam Schmitt was the starter on the mound for Salem. Frostburg got off to a nice start with a 2-run homer in the opening inning to take the early 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3
rd,
Max Atkinson was able to answer back with a solo homer of his own. Moments later,
Aidan McMurdo hit a sac fly to knock in
Hunter Rose to tie the game up at 2 as we headed into the 4
th inning. The Bobcats were able to grab the lead back in the 4
th after a error and a few singles led to 2 runs. In the top of the 5
th, Frostburg extended the lead even more with another 2-run homer. Frostburg now had a commanding 6-2 lead.
Max Atkinson was able to continue his monster day with another solo shot, which was his second homer of the game. However, that wouldn't be quite enough as Frostburg defeated Salem 6-3.
Frostburg State 10, Salem 5
In game 2,
Jackson Thoma was the starter for Salem at the pitcher spot.
Reese Rinna opened the game with a 2-run homer that scored
Jacob Hurley. In the top of the 2
nd, the Bobcats tied the game up at 2 after a few hits. Frostburg eventually secured their first lead of the day in the 3
rd with a double. That lead wouldn't last long after Hurley and Rinna both doubled leading to 3 more runs for Salem. Salem led 5-3 as we headed into the 4
th. However, in the following innings Frostburg would take a commanding lead after a triple and multiple doubles led to 6 runs. Frostburg was able to get another insurance run in the 7
th and cruise to a 10-5 victory.
Frostburg State 5, Salem 2
For game 3,
Conor Thiele was the starter on the mound for Salem. Frostburg earned the first run of the game in the 2
ndwith a single. The Tigers bats came out quiet in game 3. The Bobcats were able to extend their lead to 2-0 in the 4
th after another single. However, the Tigers answered back in the bottom of the 4
th when
Alex Harper hit a rbi single to score
Jacob Hurley. Unfortunately, Frostburg was able to control the majority of this one and add on 2 more insurance runs in the 7
th.
Ryder Costa was able to get a rbi in the bottom of the 7
th, but Salem was unable to add anything else as Frostburg secured the 5-2 victory.
Salem 1, Frostburg State 0
In the final game of the series,
Eric Kovach got the start on the mound for Salem. The Tigers started out nicely when
Aaron Forbes hit a rbi single to knock in
Reese Rinna. Frostburg really struggled to get anything going as Salem was able to maintain that 1-0 lead. The Tigers needed to add an insurance run to make things tougher on the Bobcats. Frostburg had the tying runner on third in the top of the 7
th with 2 outs. Fortunately, the Tigers were able to close the game out to secure the 1-0 victory. Kovach earned his fourth victory of the season as he delivered a complete game shutout.Â
Following the last full home series of the season, the Tigers will head on the road for their next match up. The Tigers will travel to Canton, Ohio on Tuesday for a doubleheader at 12pm with Walsh University.
