NUTTER FORT, West Virginia- With storms across the mountain state, the Salem Tigers baseball was still able to finish out the regular season against the Point Park Pioneers this weekend. The Tigers wanted to close out the regular season strong, but Point Park ended up taking the series 3 games to 1.
Point Park 4, Salem 0
In game 1, the Tigers had
Sam Schmitt get the start on the mound. Point Park came out of the gates with a massive 2
ndinning hitting back-to-back home runs to grab an early 3-0 lead. The Tigers were unsuccessful in the hit column early on and were held hitless through the first 3 innings. While the Tigers were unable to get anything going on, the Pioneers added another insurance run in the top of the 6
th. Point Park was able to hold strong and take the game 1 victory by a final of 4-0.
Point Park 5, Salem 4
For game 2,
Jackson Thoma was the starter on the mound for Salem. Point Park started out with a 1-0 lead after one with a rbi groundout. The Tigers would knot the game up at 1 in the bottom of the 1
st after
Jose Lojo scored on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the 2
nd,
Max Atkinson delivered a homer over the left field wall to give Salem the 2-1 advantage. Unfortunately, the Pioneers answered back with a home run of their own in the 3
rd. Point Park added in another run after a rbi single to left field in the 4
th. Point Park now held a 4-2 advantage. In the 7
th, the Pioneers broke open the game knocking in 2 more runs after a pair of doubles.
Aaron Forbes and
Reese Rinna both had a rbi double for Salem in the bottom of the 7
th. However, that wouldn't be enough as Point Park secured the narrow 5-4 victory over Salem.
Salem 4, Point Park 0
In game 3,
Conor Thiele was the starter at the pitcher position for Salem. Both teams' bats started off quiet with just 2 hits combined through the first 3 innings.
Aaron Forbes scored the first run of the game in the top of the 4
th off a
Luis Angarita rbi groundout. In the same inning,
Max Atkinson hit a rbi single to knock in
Hunter Rose. Salem held the 2-0 advantage after 4 innings. In the top of the 6
th,
Luis Angarita continued nice day by adding a rbi triple to score Rose. In the top of the 7
th,
Jose Lojo scored on a wild pitch to give Salem another insurance run. Salem cruised to a 4-0 victory and
Conor Thiele earned his 7
th win on the season.
Point Park 12, Salem 11
In the final game of the regular season,
Eric Kovach was the starter on the mound for Salem.
Reese Rinna hit a massive 2 run homer to right field wall to take the early 2-0 lead. However, the Pioneers would follow that up with a huge 1
st inning scoring 6 runs off 6 hits. In the 3
rd,
Alex Harper and
Luis Angarita both hit rbi singles to punch in 4 more runs total for Salem. Point Park answered back with 3 run homer in the bottom of the 3
rd. After 3 innings, Point Park had a 9-5 advantage. The Tigers did cut into the lead in the 4
th inning following a
Joe Wintermute rbi double and an
Aaron Forbes rbi single. In the 5
th inning with the bases loaded, the Tigers were able to add in 2 more runs after a hit by pitch and a walk. Unfortunately, Point Park homered yet again to take the 11-9 lead after 5 innings. However, Salem was able to tie it up following a sac fly and a wild pitch led to 2 more runs just in time to send it to extras. Unfortunately, Point Park hit a walk off single in the bottom of the 9
th to take the 12-11 victory.
After finishing up the regular season, the Tigers will try to quickly look past this series to now prepare for postseason play. Salem will now await to see which seed they will get in the USCAA Tournament which will take place in Dubois, Pennsylvania starting on May 12
th.
